Practical in-house career paths

I’ve tried to collect all of the practical career paths a designer could take to get a full-time in-house design job.

  1. Make good work → put it in a portfolio → apply for jobs.
  2. Make good work → post it somewhere public and active → build a following → tell your followers you want a job.
  3. Make good work → post it somewhere public and active → build a following → wait for someone to privately offer you a job.
  4. Find an entry level job where you can make an impact → make an impact → get promoted.
  5. Find an entry level job where you can make an impact → make an impact → collect proof that you made an impact → apply for a more senior job.
  6. Find an entry level job at a company with an impressive name → work at that company for a reasonable amount of time → apply for more senior jobs at companies where they are impressed.
  7. Become a freelance designer and work with companies which have an impressive name → apply for jobs at companies that are impressed.
  8. Become an expert and good communicator → reach out to companies directly and convince them to hire you.
