Split a word without hyphenation so that it sits on more than one line.
In a practical sense this helps if you’ve got a long word that needs to fit into a small space. In a less practical sense it’s visually interesting and forces someone to spend more time reading it because it’s harder to read.
As mentioned above, this technique makes text harder to read, so if it’s important that someone can quickly understand something this isn’t a good idea.
