Passion

Good craft is the result of passion. It’s a personal act for the maker.

They get more out of the act than whatever the artefact is. The result is not just an artefact. It’s an artefact plus emotion.

The process is usually enjoyable. One of those joys is that the maker can see an idea take shape as they work. There is often an emotional tie to the process of creation.

Even if it is not enjoyable, the process is often ritualistic or even fetishistic. An almost religious feeling might drive the maker.

This passion will sometimes replace the need for money. A craftsperson might make something even if they will not be paid for it.
